SERIES PRODUCER (New York, NY)

Description

In accordance with the mission of In The Life Media (IN THE LIFE) as determined by its Board of Directors, the Series Producer is responsible for all creative aspects of the production of the IN THE LIFE series. As the senior manager in the Production department, the Series Producer oversees and supervises the Coordinating Producer, Associate Producer, and the Production Coordinator, and manages their coordination of all production logistics. A significant aspect of the Series Producer's work involves working closely with the Executive Director to manage the production budget as well as the Development Director on financing the series, the Director of New Media on website content, and the Communication Officer on press and public relations. The Series Producer reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

  • Develop story ideas; field and evaluate story pitches; present segments to Executive Director for greenlight; ensure production board is maintained and current .
  • Approve all production business arrangements; hire independent contractors; sign all production agreements: negotiate, adhere to or terminate agreements as appropriate.
  • Approve and sign-off on all production expenditures in accordance IN THE LIFE's fiscal policies.
  • Write or assign and approve all scripts, text alerts and rundowns Ensure the production of the series stays on schedule and on budget.
  • Assign or act as on-set director; approve of all sets, lighting, casting and on-air talent performances and wardrobe.
  • Ensure episode segments are "locked" and delivered by due dates, and that producers meet all contractual deliverables (e.g. press-ready images/files, complete subject contact information, music cues, lower thirds, releases, scripts, etc.)
  • Ensure segment producers and stories adhere to the highest journalistic standards.
  • Ensure programs adhere to the standards of IN THE LIFE's public television distributor, American Public Television (APT), and presenting station, Thirteen/WNET.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

As a member of IN THE LIFE's management team, in addition to production responsibilities, the Series Producer also has the following duties:

  • Work closely with the Development Director and Executive Director to meet fundraising goals, including collaborating on proposals to foundations and corporations, cultivating and stewarding donors, online fundraising campaigns, and other aspects of Development.
  • Work closely with the Communications Officer and Executive Director in determining how best to pitch segments for press and publicity, and how to capitalize on other promotional opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Director of New Media to develop web exclusive content.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with the Executive Director for updates on program content and its impact on other departments.
  • Write Program Reports for the Programming Committee of the Board.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to determine series content and terms in preparation for annual contract negotiation with APT.
  • Liaison to Thirteen/WNET.

 

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years experience working as an Executive Producer, Senior Producer, Executive in Charge of Production or Series Producer of a network, public television or cable series.
  • Advanced degree in film/television/journalism.
  • High level of contract negotiation experience.
  • Ideal candidate will have experience working with non-profits and Boards of Directors.
  • Successful candidate will have a roster of industry segment producers to call upon to produce story packages for IN THE LIFE.
  • Proven extensive knowledge of and interest in LGBT communities and issues.

Public Relations | Communications Internship (New York, NY)

IN THE LIFE is a national television series in a newsmagazine format that reports on LGBT issues and culture. IN THE LIFE is broadcast on 246 public television stations nationwide, including all of the top 20 viewer markets, reaching 75 million U.S. households each month. This is an outstanding opportunity to work within the television industry/media-space, and gain valuable insight and practical experience in the areas of public relations, marketing and promotions within the LGBT market. This is an ideal opportunity for students majoring in public relations, communications, business, marketing, social services, or someone interested in a career within PR and/or the nonprofit sector.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist IN THE LIFE's Communications Officer, working within a busy, fast-paced Communications department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; administrative support, station/media relations, community outreach, assembling media kits, drafting press releases and other communications-oriented material. A minimum of a 10-12 hour work week over a 3-month time period is required.

Qualifications

Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential! This is a "hands-on" opportunity in a dynamic environment. As such, having a good sense of humor, but a professional approach to problem-solving and staying on task is critical. Familiarity with MS Word and Excel is preferred.

Fundraising Intern

Do you want a career in fundraising and development? Interested in learning how to raise money for your own films? If so, join IN THE LIFE's internship program. As an IN THE LIFE Fundraising Intern, you'll learn the full scope of fundraising from membership, foundation proposals, major gifts and special events.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Direct of Development with correspondence to donors, prospects and other funding sources.
  • Assist the Development Coordinator in planning and carrying out fundraising events, including logistics, mailings, soliciting event sponsorships and managing the event itself.
  • Assist the Development Officer with grant proposals and corporate sponsorshipsolicitations, and stewardship.
  • Participate in Development team meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Development.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will either have a Bachelor's degree or be currently pursuing one. She should be interested in pursuing fundraising and development as a career. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Intellectual curiosity and a "roll-up-your-sleeves" attitude are desired.

Production Interns (New York, NY)

Description

Seeking a production intern to assist in the operation of a busy production office as needed: administrative support, research, field production, editing. 16 to 24 hrs a week commitment; 8 weeks for screen credit; 3 months minimum.

Qualifications

Ability to communicate concisely; computer literate (word processing, data entry, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer helpful). Excellent organizational skills; detail oriented. A good sense of humor, yet reliable and remarkable work ethic. Insightful knowledge of political, health, social, economic and cultural issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Strong commitment to social justice and excellent television programming. Although this is a non-paid internship, you will be exposed to all areas of production. This is a real hands-on internship. No just "making coffee" here. It is up to you how far you go and what you make of it.
