In The Life Media (ITLM) produces change through innovative media that exposes social injustice by chronicling lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) life and providing our audience with effective ways to advance equality within and beyond our communities. ITLM was founded in 1992 on the simple premise of using media to advance social and political justice for LGBT people. Since then, ITLM has been the media leader for the LGBT movement, and over the last decade, ITLM has advanced beyond a television-only platform to air across media platforms with greater flexibility and explicitly link media to activism on the Internet. ITLM fosters activism by producing investigative journalism, distributing it to the broadest possible audiences (utilizing broadcast, online and mobile tools), partnering with advocacy groups and providing tools for viewers to take action.
The Marketing & Communications Manager creates and executes an annual campaign plan that oversees all marketing, communications and media activities to promote ITLM's content and message nationally in print, broadcast and online media.
Responsibilities
The Marketing & Communications Manager responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Media & Public Relations
- Actively promotes and manages all ITLM's programs, activities and messaging in national, regional and special interest media in print, radio, television, online and in the blogosphere
- Oversees timely creation and management of social network communications on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and all emerging social networking opportunities
- Writes and distributes all press releases and media alerts
- Produces co-venture screening events with corporate and community partners including: booking presenters, managing promotion and coordination of partner communications, and event stage management
- Leads Management Team efforts in crafting and ensuring consistency of corporate identity and messaging
Marketing
- Writes, produces and edits content for internal and external marketing and communications material including: website, monthly program alerts, quarterly e-newsletters, annual report, brochures, invitations, and other ITLM materials
- Ensures that brand standards are followed by all internal and external users: manages design and production of all branded material attributes (e.g. logo, approved fonts and color palette), ensuring they are reflected in all printed and broadcast (television, online, mobile etc.) materials
- Develops and manages all advertising and promotional campaigns
Station Relations
- Manages relationships with all American Public Television (APT) member stations
- Manages monthly airdate requests to stations and oversees updating of airdates schedule in database
- Manages Get IN THE LIFE and related grassroots initiatives to improve airtimes and increase broadcast carriage
Community Outreach and Education
- Directs and manages all outreach programs and initiatives
- Manages ITLM's promotional and allied organizational partnerships
- Produces monthly Education = Action web pages
Finance/Administration
- Produces annual department budget and cash flow
- Tracks department and project expenses and communicates cash flow variances with the Finance department
- Manages all vendor relations in accordance with organization policy
- Manages contacts and relationships on Donor Works, ITLM's central database
Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- 3-5 years of demonstrated results oriented experience in communications, marketing or public relations
- Bachelors degree in marketing, public relations, communications or related study
- Outstanding written and verbal communications
- Highly motivated, success driven marketing/PR professional
- Well-connected and networked thought leader in marketing, public and media relations with experience in social networking, SMS engagement and Internet search engine optimization
- Proven relationship manager with strong negotiating and follow-up skills
- Respected and well-liked community organizer
- Superior time, project management and problem solving skills
- Expert multi-tasker
- Astute and conscientious cost center budget manager
- Proficiency in MAC office, In-Design, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Adobe creative suite (Photoshop, In-design, Illustrator) and Cision
- Avid interest in current LGBT issues, local and national
Salary and Benefits
Salary starts at $40,000 and is commensurate with experience. Paid vacation and personal time, 100% employer paid health, life, and long-term disability insurance. Supplemental insurance plans available.

IN THE LIFE is a national television series in a newsmagazine format that reports on LGBT issues and culture. IN THE LIFE is broadcast on 246 public television stations nationwide, including all of the top 20 viewer markets, reaching 75 million U.S. households each month. This is an outstanding opportunity to work within the television industry/media-space, and gain valuable insight and practical experience in the areas of public relations, marketing and promotions within the LGBT market. This is an ideal opportunity for students majoring in public relations, communications, business, marketing, social services, or someone interested in a career within PR and/or the nonprofit sector.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist IN THE LIFE's Communications Officer, working within a busy, fast-paced Communications department. Responsibilities include but are not limited to; administrative support, station/media relations, community outreach, assembling media kits, drafting press releases and other communications-oriented material. A minimum of a 10-12 hour work week over a 3-month time period is required.
Qualifications
Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential! This is a "hands-on" opportunity in a dynamic environment. As such, having a good sense of humor, but a professional approach to problem-solving and staying on task is critical. Familiarity with MS Word and Excel is preferred.

Seeking a production intern to assist in the operation of a busy production office as needed: administrative support, research, field production, editing. 16 to 24 hrs a week commitment; 8 weeks for screen credit; 3 months minimum.
Qualifications
Ability to communicate concisely; computer literate (word processing, data entry, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer helpful). Excellent organizational skills; detail oriented. A good sense of humor, yet reliable and remarkable work ethic. Insightful knowledge of political, health, social, economic and cultural issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Strong commitment to social justice and excellent television programming. Although this is a non-paid internship, you will be exposed to all areas of production. This is a real hands-on internship. No just "making coffee" here. It is up to you how far you go and what you make of it.

Working with Series Producer, freelancers take stories from development to completion, writing script, shooting interviews with crew, overseeing editing and supplying all deliverables on time and within budget.
